Madain Salih (SA)

The archaeological site of Madain Saleh

The archaeological site of Madain Saleh is situated at the south-east of Petra, Jordan and leis in Medina, Saudi Arabia

After driving for hours in the desert, I finally saw small piles in the distance. At first they were just it looked like ordinary hills, but when we came closer the magnificent structures appeared.

The site is on a plain, at the foot of a basalt plateau, which forms a portion of the Hijaz mountains.
In the middle of the desert the carved site was extraordinary!
The setting is notable for its desert landscape, marked by sandstone outcrops of various sizes and heights.
The western and north-western portions of the site contain a water table that can be reached.

It is no wonder that the archaeological site was proclaimed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
